2012 Summer Biathlon Schedule

This year the Callaghan Winter Sports Club summer biathlon schedule features two weekend biathlon camps, two cross biathlon events and two bike biathlon events.

Weekend Biathlon Camps

Our weekend biathlon camps provide an excellent introduction to biathlon for beginners, and are a great way for experienced biathletes to improve and refine their shooting in advance of the upcoming biathlon season. The camps will focus on shooting instruction and practice at the biathlon range.

The camps will be held at Whistler Olympic Park on the weekends of July 7/8 and August 11/12. The camps will run from 10am-4pm on Saturday and Sunday. Rifles and ammunition are provided and a firearms licence (PAL) is not necessary to participate in these camps.

These camps are open for everyone ages 8 and up.

The registration fee per camp is $125 for minors and $175 for adults, which includes a 2011/2012 CWSC membership. Current CWSC members receive a $25 discount per camp.

Registration for these camps is now available online via credit card.

Summer Biathlon Events

Put your athletic and shooting skills to the test with our summer biathlon series events! The 2012 CWSC Summer Biathlon Series features four summer biathlon events: two cross (running) biathlons and two bike biathlons.

These events are fun and recreational in nature and are a great way to try out the sport of biathlon for the first time, while providing a challenge to those with previous biathlon experience. The events consist of three running or biking loops and two shooting bouts, and are open to everyone ages 8 and up.

There are two distance categories for the Cross Biathlons (3x500m Cruiser View Map, 3x900m Challenge View Map) and for the Bike Biathlons (3x1.5km Cruiser View Map, 3x3km Challenge View Map). All courses are on paved trails and are open to mountain, road and cruiser bikes.

No previous firearms experience is required to participate. Participants will receive rifle safety and target shooting instruction and an opportunity to practice before taking part in the events. These events are open for everyone ages 8 and up.

The events will be held at Whistler Olympic Park on the following dates:

  • Cross Biathlon 1 - July 22
  • Bike Biathlon 1 - August 4
  • Bike Biathlon 2 - August 26
  • Cross Biathlon 2 - September 16

The cost per event is $20 for ages 18 and under and $25 for ages 19 and up (age as of December 31, 2012). CWSC members receive a $5 discount per event.

Registration is available online via credit card up until the day before each event or on event day with cash ($5 extra fee for race day registration).

Event Day Check-in/Registration: 10:00-11:00am
Rifle Safety Instruction: 11:30am
Events Start Time: 12:00pm

Volunteers

The Summer Biathlon Series Events are a great opportunity to learn how to be an official or to refresh your skills in anticipation of the 2013 Canadian Biathlon Championships in March 2013. We are looking for volunteers in timing and on the range who want to practice or learn a new area in biathlon, including the electronic keypad and timing operation. Callaghan Winter Sports Club to Host the 2013 Canadian Biathlon Championships

SQUAMISH, BRITISH COLUMBIA (23 April 2012)

The Callaghan Winter Sports Club (the “CWSC”) today announced that it has been awarded the 2013 Canadian Biathlon Championships (the “2013 Biathlon Nationals”). The 2013 Biathlon Nationals will be held at Whistler Olympic Park, with Squamish serving as the host community. The 2013 Biathlon Nationals are tentatively scheduled for March 20-24, 2013.

With the awarding of the 2013 Biathlon Nationals to the CWSC, the national championships in all four nordic disciplines, including cross country, ski jumping and nordic combined, will be held at Whistler Olympic Park next year. These four national championships will anchor a major nordic sport festival in Sea-to-Sky Country in the year leading up to the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

The CWSC is the official designated host club for 3 of the 4 events, and CWSC officials will be active in running all four national championships.

This nordic festival will provide a boost to nordic sports and the local economy. Over the course of the 2 week festival there will be approximately 1,200 athletes and coaches staying in the Sea-to-Sky Corridor. In addition, the festival will bring significant media attention to the Corridor from across Canada and the world as Canada’s best nordic athletes will be in attendance.

“The awarding of the 2013 Biathlon Nationals to the Callaghan Winter Sports Club is great news for local nordic sports and our community as a whole”, said Clayton Whitman, CWSC President. “The nordic festival will be an excellent opportunity to showcase how quickly the legacy of nordic sports from the 2010 Olympics has taken root throughout Sea-to-Sky Country. We are very excited to have world-class Canadian athletes returning to Whistler Olympic Park to compete once again as they prepare for the next Olympic Winter Games.”

The rapid growth of this legacy has taken place thanks to the many efforts of CWSC volunteers, including Max Saenger, Biathlon Sport Manager for the 2010 Olympics and Chief of Competition for the 2013 Biathlon Nationals. “The awarding 2013 Biathlon Nationals is really the culmination of two full winters of great hosting by CWSC volunteers”, said Saenger. “When our Club hosted important events like World Junior selections, North American Championships, BC Cups and BC Championships over the past 2 winters it showed everyone that in the post-Olympic era our community continues to be a great host for major nordic events. Being awarded the 2013 Biathlon Nationals is proof of the amazing capabilities of our very skilled local volunteer officials.”

Details regarding the four national championships and the nordic festival, and information on how to get involved as an organizer or volunteer will be posted this Spring on the CWSC website at callaghanwintersportsclub.com.
